GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR PERFORMING RADON GAS TESTS
(Short-term)
- For twelve hours prior to the test and during the testing period, the doors and windows must remain closed except for normal entry and exit.
- Tests should not be conducted under severe weather conditions.
- The canister should be placed at breathing height approximately 30" to 7' from the floor in the center of the room or near inside walls and away from outside walls, drafts from heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, doors, windows or portable fans.
- DO NOT place canisters in a crawl space or a sump since these areas are not considered "suitable for occupancy" by any state or federal agency.
- One charcoal canister will cover an area of approximately 2000 square feet.
Performing the Test:
TO BEGIN THE TEST
A
fter determining a suitable location, following these steps:
- To begin exposure, remove the vinyl tape from the canister & remove the lid (opened). Put the lid on the bottom of the canister & replace the tape around the circumference of the canister. Place the canisters on a hard surface with open side up.
- If you are performing a double test, place the second canister approximately 4" from the first.
- Record the canister serial #, floor level, and room name, as well as the date & time canister/s were opened.
- Allow the canister/s to be exposed for NO LESS THAN 48 hours & NO MORE THAN 96 hours.
TO END THE TEST
- Once the exposure time has ended, remove the vinyl tape from canister & remove the lid. Replace the lid in it’s original position (closed) covering the canister . Replace the vinyl tape around the canister’s circumference to seal the canister. If the vinyl tape is missing, you may use electrical tape. Be sure to make the tape long enough to wrap around the canister one and one- half times.
If the canister/s are not re-taped the test results will be non-certified.
- Record the date & time the canister/s were closed on the Information Form & on this page in the area below. Be sure to circle
AM or PM, as well as record the actual time in hours & minutes (i.e. 9:24 PM) on the form.
- Return the sealed canister/s with the original copy of the Information Form immediately to our laboratory via first class mail to the lab’s mailing address below or overnight delivery service to the lab’s shipping address below:

Important Note:Canister/s
must arrive at the laboratory within 10 days from the date canisters were closed
or results will not be certified.

We maintain all data and other information strictly
confidential and will not release it to other parties without specific
permission from the customer, except where required by law. Information may be
included in reports to the public but without reference to specific names or
addresses. We do not accept responsibility for financial or health consequences
or subsequent action taken by our customer or his consultants as a result of
this analysis and sampling. We make NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESSED OR
IMPLIED for the consequences of erroneous test results. Neither National Safety
Products, Inc., nor any of it's employees or agents shall be liable under any
claim, charge or demand whether in contract, tort or otherwise, for any and all
loss, cost, charge, claim, demand, fee, expense or damage of any nature or kind
arising out of, connected with, resulting from or sustained as a result of any
radon testing requested.
